Most people only find out their credit score when a bank rejects a loan or a credit card application. By then it's too late to fix much. The UMANG app, the Government of India's all-in-one citizen services app, lets you check your CIBIL score from your phone, usually without paying anything.
What is UMANG, and why use it for this?
UMANG (Unified Mobile Application for New-age Governance) provides access to a wide range of central and state government services through a single platform, including EPFO services, DigiLocker, Aadhaar-related facilities, LPG services, bill payments and more. A CIBIL score check is among the services listed on its home screen.
The main reason to use it is that you're already working inside a government-backed app, so you aren't handing your details to a random third-party site. The score itself comes from TransUnion CIBIL, India's best-known credit bureau.
Step-by-step: checking your CIBIL score on UMANG
- Install the app: Download UMANG from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.
- Register or log in: Sign up with your mobile number and verify it with an OTP. Set an MPIN if the app asks for one.
- Find the CIBIL service: On the home screen, look under Explore Services for the CIBIL tab and tap it. If you can't see it, type "CIBIL" in the search bar.
- Choose "Know your CIBIL score." This opens the credit score request form.
- Enter your details and give consent: Fill in your first name, last name, date of birth, mobile number, PAN card number and email ID. Read the consent screen carefully before you agree.
- Verify with an OTP: An OTP is sent to your registered mobile number. Enter it in the app.
- View your score: Once verification succeeds, your CIBIL score appears on screen.
Will checking your score lower it?
No. When you check your own score, it's treated as a "soft enquiry," which doesn't affect your credit standing. Hard enquiries happen when a lender checks your credit because you applied for a loan or card. Several of those in a short time can pull your score down.
Is it really free?
RBI rules entitle every individual to one free full credit report per year from each credit bureau. Some platforms offer free score views, while others push paid subscriptions for ongoing monitoring. If any screen asks for payment, stop and read what it's offering before you agree. A free annual check is usually all you need.
If the app doesn't work for you
- Can't find the CIBIL tab: update the app, or search for it manually.
- OTP not arriving: check network coverage and make sure your number is the one linked to your records.
- "No record found": if you've never taken a loan or credit card, you may have no credit history yet. That isn't a bad score, just a blank one.
- Details don't match: If the personal information you enter differs from the details linked to your PAN, the CIBIL score check may not go through.
If the app keeps failing, you can get the same free report from the official CIBIL website or app.
What to do after you see your score
- Check all report details, not just the score: Check for loans you don't recognise, wrongly marked defaults, or closed accounts still showing as open.
- Dispute errors early: Report wrong entries to the bureau and the lender, since fixes can take weeks.
- Pay on time: Payment history is the biggest factor in your score.
- Keep card usage low: Staying well below your credit limit helps.
- Don't apply for many loans at once: Each application can add a hard enquiry.
- Keep old accounts open where it's sensible, because longer history helps.
Checking your CIBIL score through UMANG takes a few minutes, and it shows you where you stand before a lender does. Treat it as a regular financial check-up, and fix anything that looks off early, when it's still easy to do so.
